Guess What?  A competition was held for the Most Inspiring Teacher by Warehouse Stationery.  There were over 7,000 nominations and one of the Central School teachers came in the top 30!!  These 30 teachers  will each receive a $1,000 Warehouse Stationery Classroom Prize Pack.

The Pool

First a fire engine came and pumped out the water.  Now the cleaning.  Mr Kirikino had some 'helpers' after school today.  Good job guys, the pool is looking good and is only going to look better when we have one more  thing - WATER!!  Watch this space..

Master - Librarian Book Review Challenge

This competition was open to all Rangi Students. They had to create a really impressive book review to inspire their fellow students to read a favourite book. The reviews are displayed in the library so go have a look. Mrs Tait said it was very hard to pick the winner.

What is a Pou?

 


A Pou is a supportive pole or pillar.  The Poutokomanawa is the centre pole of the meeting house.  Our pou at school were placed in the earth today around our school field.  Our pou represent the four syndicates and their meanings are the poutokomanawa of our school! The syndicate names are from our school logo.  Thank you Mrs Barbara for your guidance and the information about the pou.

Special mention to the amazing helpers who dug the holes and erected the pou.  He mihi nui ki a koutou.

Spelling With the Stars

The World is not a Dump Play.

Unhinged Productions performed a play with an important message.  Based on the book by Nikki Slade Robinson, the message of the play was to think about "stuff" before it is thrown into a landfill.  This environmental performance was great.  Noel Ratapu a former Central School Student was in the play.  Thank you Unhinged productions for coming to entertain us as well as pass on an important message.

Master Chef

Noah won the Gisborne Primary School  Junior Master Chef Competition.  Congratulations Noah.  Feel free to bring any of your cooking to school for your teachers to try!

Te Papa Visit

On Tuesday our class room 13 went to the museum. We went to talk about our taonga. Then someone from our group had 30 seconds to grab 5 things to dress up in to take photos in.  We were either in a group with Ati, Kimberley, Khali or Herbee. Then we all spread out across the museum and took photos of us in our dress up costume with our taonga doing a  cool pose. (Sam B)


Why visit Te Papa when Te Papa can visit us? 
The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa is coming to Gisborne! The Education and Discovery Centre teams will be based at Tairawhiti Museum for a week of exciting art workshops and learning programmes. Schools in the Gisborne area are taking part in free hands-on workshops, exploring kākahu (cloaks), taonga (treasures) and their connection to the area of Gisborne. Two large artworks, in the form of cloaks, will be created by the students, using digital photography and mixed media. The cloaks will be on display at Tairawhiti Museum and then at Te Papa in Wellington for thousands of visitors to see. (from Te Papa Blog)http://blog.tepapa.govt.nz

This is the finished Korowai - filled with all our faces.  This will be displayed at Te Papa for the next year.

Food Can Collection.

212 cans were collected for the Salvation Army food bank.  Thank you Central School Students.

Kim Gearon the manager of the food bank came and talked to some students about how the food bank works.  Here some students are presenting some of the 212 cans.  The Salvation Army has been in Gisborne for 125 years.   Kim was very pleased with our contribution.

Dancing with the Stars

Mr Tony Scragg can be seen around our school fixing up all our computer problems.  Well on Saturday night he took his talents to the dance floor.  Have a look at this great dance routine. Special mention to another Central parent and PSG legend, Mr Dougal Watts,  A super disco performance. Gisborne Herald article A big congratulations to Mr Matt Skuse, a BOT member and parent of Central students Holly and Jed.  Mr Skuse took out first place.  He sure did have the time of his life. 

JPK

On Monday night, 5:15pm  the 30th July in Room 13 will be the first ever JPK (Junior Pecha Kucha)

 Pecha Kucha is Japanese for  chit-chat.  It is  is a presentation methodology in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each (six minutes, 40 seconds in total). The format, which keeps presentations concise and fast-paced.  They are very entertaining nights.

We will be hosting the first JPK night and are lucky to have three special guests:  Pene Walsh, Sarah Cleave and Darryl Monteith.  They will select a winner to speak at the next Pecha Kucha night.

What a great evening! Congratulations to all 8 participants. Your presentations were entertaining, informative and very well constructed, and your deliveries confident beyond your years.


 After due deliberation, the judges announced that Rata Simperingham would be invited to repeat her presentation at the next meeting of the Gisborne Pecha Kucha group. Rata was a popular winner, her Samoan Holiday presentation having taken us (albeit briefly) from a miserably cold and wet night in Gisborne, to a sun drenched tropical paradise. Well done Rata. We know you'll do Central School and yourself proud when you mix it with the adult PKers. 


Thanks to all those who came along to support this event and for your donations of canned food, which will be passed on to the Salvation Army Food Bank. Thanks must go, too, to all the children involved and to Ms Young for organising another great 'first' for Central School.

Modifications - The Slideshow Extravaganza!

The Rangi Syndicate have been learning about Modifications over the term.
To end the topic, Room 13 students hosted and presented a slideshow extravaganza.
  Here, Cole is showing how musical devices have changed over time.  Some of the adults in the audience felt old!

Room 7 and Waimata, you were an excellent audience.  You listened and paid attention. 

The adults were interested too.   Hang On!!!!!  I think I can see someone asleep in the front row.  

Mrs Simmons is dressed up for the Sports day,  we hope!

Last year I got the award for most deserved of encourgement and thats got my cousins name on it. All of the old ladies said gosh that girl reminds me of Kate Samson! (Thats my Cousin)

This year I got a first in my Watlz and I got the Warwick Allen Cup!

Room 13 hosted the Rangi Syndicate Assembly on Monday 7th May. We had a Samoan theme, with students wearing lavalavas, leis  and many of the girls with a hibiscus or frangipani flower behind one ear. The undisputed highlight of the assembly was Room 13's performance of the Samoan song/dance, "Le Aute."

The many talents of Mrs Webster.

Today Ms Young taught Mrs Webster about the blogs.  Was she a good student?  Find out soon.
One thing Mrs Webster can do is sing.

She has a lovely voice and has been teaching the Rangi Syndicate some folk singing.

Mrs Webster says: I managed to add a couple of things to the blog, so I guess that means I'm a good student - or perhaps it simply confirms that Ms Young's a great teacher -she certainly managed to teach this old dog some new tricks today.

Nau Mai Haere Mai Mr Hayward

The powhiri for our new principal, Mr Hayward was on Monday the 23rd April.  This was a wonderful occasion.  Some pupils from Woodlands School in Opotiki came to tautoko Mr Hayward. 

These lovely students were asked what Mr Hayward was like  and they said that he was an awesome principal and they are going to miss him.
Lets hope that their new principal is going to be as great as our new one.

 Our kaumatua Papa David was there along with the wonderful members of our board of trustees.

Seb said he doesn't always finish his work because he talks.  So today he sat on his own on the mat and finished all 5 sheets today!  If you don't finish work, do you think it is because you talk?  Follow Seb's good example.
