Dancing with the Stars

Mr Tony Scragg can be seen around our school fixing up all our computer problems.  Well on Saturday night he took his talents to the dance floor.  Have a look at this great dance routine. Special mention to another Central parent and PSG legend, Mr Dougal Watts,  A super disco performance. Today Ms Gaertner taught us about Mongolia.  She had recently returned from volunteering at an orphanage.  We found out about the nomadic people who live in a Ger, a traditional portable dwelling (a very flash tent!).

Thank you Ms Gaertner we really enjoyed your interesting presentation.  By the way Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia!

JPK

On Monday night, 5:15pm  the 30th July in Room 13 will be the first ever JPK (Junior Pecha Kucha)

 Pecha Kucha is Japanese for  chit-chat.  It is  is a presentation methodology in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each (six minutes, 40 seconds in total). The format, which keeps presentations concise and fast-paced.  They are very entertaining nights.

We will be hosting the first JPK night and are lucky to have three special guests:  Pene Walsh, Sarah Cleave and Darryl Monteith.  They will select a winner to speak at the next Pecha Kucha night.

What a great evening! Congratulations to all 8 participants. Your presentations were entertaining, informative and very well constructed, and your deliveries confident beyond your years.


 After due deliberation, the judges announced that Rata Simperingham would be invited to repeat her presentation at the next meeting of the Gisborne Pecha Kucha group. Rata was a popular winner, her Samoan Holiday presentation having taken us (albeit briefly) from a miserably cold and wet night in Gisborne, to a sun drenched tropical paradise. Well done Rata. We know you'll do Central School and yourself proud when you mix it with the adult PKers. 


Thanks to all those who came along to support this event and for your donations of canned food, which will be passed on to the Salvation Army Food Bank. Thanks must go, too, to all the children involved and to Ms Young for organising another great 'first' for Central School.

Modifications - The Slideshow Extravaganza!

The Rangi Syndicate have been learning about Modifications over the term.
To end the topic, Room 13 students hosted and presented a slideshow extravaganza.
  Here, Cole is showing how musical devices have changed over time.  Some of the adults in the audience felt old!

Room 7 and Waimata, you were an excellent audience.  You listened and paid attention. 

The adults were interested too.   Hang On!!!!!  I think I can see someone asleep in the front row.

The Real Art Show

 

Some of the Rangi students visited this amazing truck today.

 A $2.75 million truck, which has been transformed into a travelling art gallery, has a special cargo of precious New Zealand artwork as part of the Real Art Roadshow.

The roadshow is making its way to schools throughout the country.
It was at Wainui School.

Dare to Dream - Leadership Week.

Many people dream, but Sir Peter Blake set his mind to a goal and went for it, believing that "change comes through realising the vision and turning it into reality." This year during Leadership Week 2012 from 22 - 29 June be inspired to Dare to Dream by demonstrating and showcasing leadership in your community.

Leadership Week is an annual event for all ages that highlights the value that great leadership provides for New Zealand. As Sir Peter Blake showed New Zealand, there are leaders and there are dreamers. Leaders make things happen. Dreamers have a vision. The truly special people do both.

Today the Rangi syndicate listened to the motivational talk by Papa Owen Lloyd

(Nga Ariki Kaiputahi, Ngāti Porou, Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Rongowhakaata, Whakatōhea) is a member and/or chair of a range of organisations including the New Zealand Council of Social Services, Social Services Industry Training Organisation, Gisborne Council of Social Services and Nga Ariki Kaiputahi Iwi. He is part of the negotiation teams for Turanga Treaty claims negotiations and fulfilling a number of governance roles. He has a background in General Management and Maori Health management, funding and planning for health services including for Tairawhiti District Health Board.

His networks within Tairawhiti are: Chair of the Tairawhiti Truancy service, member of Youth Offending Team, member of the Tairawhiti Police Maori Advisory Board, Member of the Aitanga A Mahaki Tribal trust as well as a trustee on Mangatu Marae, The District Arts in Public Places Trust (Chaired by the Mayor), The District Council Navigation project (chaired by the Mayor) and many years of community involvement with both Maori and non Maori. Fish for the Future

The New Zealand Sport Fishing Council Inc (NZSFC) (formerly known as the New Zealand Big Game Fishing Council or the NZBGFC) is proud to introduce the Hiwi the Kiwi Goes Fishing project to the school children of New Zealand. With New Zealand being a country where you are never far from the sea, the NZSFC believes that it is best to educate our children from an early age on how to best enjoy, manage, protect and preserve our marine environment.
Everybody knows that eating fish is healthy. Going fishing is also recognised as one of the most popular, not to mention healthy, activities undertaken by Kiwis, with over 1 in 4 ‘having a go' at it each year. As Kiwis we all want to ‘do the right thing'.
Mark de Lacy aka "The Minstrel" and Hiwi the Kiwi are already well known to a generation of Kiwi school children with their road show having toured extensively, entertaining and inspiring tens of thousands of children over the past 10 years.

Elliot Blakely

Saul from room 13 organised Elliot Blakely to come and talk to some Rangi students.  Elliot is an inspiration and talked about making movies and photography.  Watch this space, we have a strong suspicion that Elliot is on the verge of stardom.  Thanks Elliot for giving up your time and sharing your creativity with us.

R.I.P Sam

Pets are part of the family and special.

Sam Skuse was 14 years old, that is 98 years in human years.
She had to be put asleep yesterday by the vet because she was too old  and was in pain and couldn't move her two back legs.

She will be missed.

Last year I got the award for most deserved of encourgement and thats got my cousins name on it. All of the old ladies said gosh that girl reminds me of Kate Samson! (Thats my Cousin)

This year I got a first in my Watlz and I got the Warwick Allen Cup!

Nanny Col

The Rangi Syndicate wanted a Grandparent. So the call went out,
and Nanny Col answered. 

Nanny Col (aka Mrs Colleen Skuse) has agreed to be our first adopted grandparent.

Under her guidance we are going to make the front garden a visual symphony.


Today we just had a look and made a plan.  Our new gardening word for the day - 'Annuals'.  We will be professional gardeners before you know it.  Thank you Nanny Col we look forward to working alongside with you.

Book Swap

Next Wednesday the 6^th June will be the first ever ‘Great book Swap’ held in room 13.  If successful this may be the first of a quarterly event and one which Room 13 would like to see catch on to the syndicate then school.

The idea is simple – bring a book, take a book.  Bring 10 books, take 10 books.   Each student is issued with “book tickets” when they drop off their book to the book station.  The tickets allow them to choose other books.

Students who want to participate bring books from home, that they have finished reading and don’t think they will read again.  We talked about the importance of not raiding your big brother’s bookcase at home but only bringing your own books that you really are finished with.

 The concept came out of the Re-using and re-cycling.  Books are expensive and not all students get to go to the local book shop and buy new books, with the book swap students are getting ‘new’ books without spending any money. 

I want to be a fish.

o        A number of things must be taken into consideration when you are deciding what kind or kinds of fish are right for you. Saltwater and freshwater fish may both be kept as pets; freshwater fish are easier to care for while saltwater fish are available in a greater variety (and are often more expensive). You should also consider which fish are compatible with each other, how big they will grow, and how much care and maintenance they require.

Room 13 hosted the Rangi Syndicate Assembly on Monday 7th May. We had a Samoan theme, with students wearing lavalavas, leis  and many of the girls with a hibiscus or frangipani flower behind one ear. The undisputed highlight of the assembly was Room 13's performance of the Samoan song/dance, "Le Aute."
