Wonder Women Day

Inquiry

The concept this term is Inquiry. We are exploring Science topics and asking questions about why things happen. These girls are trying to figure out what is a conductor of electricity and what is an insulator.

The Sports Shed

Something very cool is happening around our sports shed. A big thank you to Daniel Watts who spent his Sunday digging and hammering to prepare the area for the concrete. His Dad, Dougal is on the PSG and we thank him and all the PSG members for their fundraising so cool things like this happen around our school. Thank you we really appreciate your commitment to the students at Central.

Tom Duncan and Corey Newman - TV Stars!

TV 3 News with Tom and Cory.

Story by Amanda Gillies TV 3

In the playground, in the classroom and on the sports field, Gisborne nine-year-olds Cory Newman and Tom Duncan are inseparable.
The commentating and the playing for are done from Cory's wheelchair. He has cerebral palsy.
"I was born early. I was a bit undercooked. And that's probably the reason I don't have my legs developed as properly as other people. And I think my brain hadn't developed properly. But over the years it's developed more and my thinking part has really grown, and it's one of the best IQs in the family," he says.
But he's a realist who knows he'll never play for his favourite rugby team.
He also thought triathlons were a no-go until his best mate, Tom – a champion triathlete, made him an offer he couldn't refuse.
"Mum showed me a video on YouTube of this big brother who had a little kid that couldn't walk, and it gave me an idea to ring Ang and ask if Cory wanted to do a triathlon with me," Tom says.

It was the Weetbix Kids Tryathlon, but it wasn't going to be easy. For the 100-metre swim, Cory would need to be strapped into a special rescue tube. Tom would pull him along.
For the 4-kilometre cycle, a special bike had to be created and joined to a normal bike. And for the 1.5km run, Tom had to push Cory in his wheelchair.
"I like to pretend I was one certain Lego set for each event. Like the Lego City Fire Boat for the swim, then the Mobile Police Unit for the bike. And then the run, one of my favourite city Lego sets of all time – the Lego City Passenger Plane," says Cory.
They trained for weeks, and come race day were working together like a well oiled machine.
"For Cory it's just being part of it," says Cory's mother, Ang Newman. "He just wants to be in the thick of it and to be like all the other kids. So for him it was an amazing opportunity. And it was made even more amazing because Tom was his teammate and they did it together."
They're now also keen to enter some winter duathlons together and one day, hopefully, an Ironman. Cory also has his eye on the Paralympics, but first it's time for some handball and jokes in the schoolyard.

Bike Wise

On Tuesday 12th February these wonderful people came to our school to help teach us about safety on bikes.  Thank you to all who helped.

Here is Hannah Veitch's report on Bike Wise:
I never knew that I could have been biking illegally until it had my lesson at bike wise. I learnt that biking on the footpath is actually illegal and you have to have two brakes that work on your bike when you are biking on the road.
If you are biking at night time you have to have pedal lights or lights on your wheels or lights on your brakes plus a high vis, so people can see on the road when it is dark.
They split us into two groups and two paths in each group using cones. What we were aiming to do was to bike in a straight line so we can see what we are doing and where we are going. To do this with our bikes we did something called “ the scoot” which is where you have your pedals at 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock with both hands on the handle bars and left foot on the left pedal, and with the right leg you scoot (push) and look forward. As we got the hang of scooting we added gliding on our last push of our scoot. All of us kids had accomplished that and started practicing using our back brake. We pedaled really fast and then slammed on our brakes and saw how long it took us to stop. Soon we started using both brakes, the same thing but with both brakes. I pedaled really fast stood up on my pedals and I had all my weight forward and... my back tyre went up and I went forward and I landed on the ground. It didn’t hurt and everyone was laughing including me. It was because I had all of my weight forward so it tipped over forward. After the biking activities we did some biking games and it all ended well.

               STOP SHARK FINNING

I think shark finning should be banned. By shark finning we are taking the shark species to extinction. It is also wasteful because we are not even using the whole shark.
New Zealand is one of a few countries that are not banned from shark finning yet. New Zealanders don’t even eat the shark fin soups. All we are doing is cutting the fins off these animals and leaving them to bleed to death.
We are taking the sharks most important body part; taking there fin away from them is taking away their life because they can’t swim without them .They need their fin to keep them steady.
My opinion is that we should ban shark finning in New Zealand.

Should we keep the Gisborne-Napier Rail?
I believe we should keep the rail because not only it stops logging trucks from travelling on the  road but it also carries food on the trains. Without the rail all those trucks have to travel on the road causing traffic jams, car accidents, pollution and pot holes in our smooth kiwi roads.

Taking away our rail is polluting the air even more.
Is that what you want? Well I don’t.
I believe that the rail should be re-opened so there wont be as many trucks on the road and less pollution.
So I think the Gisborne to Napier rail should be re-opened so Gisborne City will be happy again.

STOP POACHING!

I believe that poachers should stop poaching because animals like elephants , rhinos and the orangatang are becoming endangered because of poaching. They are losing more of their kind.

The poachers just take the horns off rhinos and the tusks off elephants and leave them to suffer. It is unfair that the poachers allow the animals to suffer and bleed to death. I think they should stop disturbing the animals because they will never harm us unless they feel threatened .

So don’t you think we should stop poaching?
I believe we should because later generations may never see the animals that are being poached today .Please leave the animals alone that are being poached
